When it comes to herbal supplements, there is a wide range of quality, and it is critical for the consumer to know that the supplement he or she is purchasing is really what it says it is. In medical studies looking for quality, unfortunately as many as one third of herbal supplements (purchased randomly) do not contain the ingredients the label claims they have. Why is this? Herbal supplements fall under the regulations of the food supplement industry and as such do not have to stand up to the strict quality guidelines of medications. Therefore if an herbal supplement comes from some part of the plant such as say the gingko biloba plant, it can be called gingko biloba. However it may not contain any of that part of the plant that contains the ingredient that causes the health benefit. In general you should eat 5- 9 servings of fruit and vegetables per day and eat a diet that is low in the refined starches and sugars. In other words, limit bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, sweets and alcohol. Emphasize healthy proteins such as chicken, fish, and lean meats. Minimize saturated fats. Favor canola oil, fish oil, and olive oil. Eat as many vegetables as possible in all combinations except limit potatoes and corn. Get plenty of vegetables and fruits because they contain many naturally occurring phyto-nutrients that reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, the two main killers.
Next, keep your weight down. This can be done eating our veggie-protein diet. It is also acceptable and often highly effective for people that are highly overweight to use meal replacements for all but 1 meal per day, and we have helped thousands of patients in that regard.
Exercise regularly. We need a minimum of 3 hours of exercise per week to achieve optimal health and this exercise should be at 2 parts aerobic exercise to one part strength or weight training.
But don’t forget about the mind. Mental well-being can be achieved with various forms of help, including spiritual, meditation, laughter, play, family, relaxation, among others.
The skin also needs attention. It is one of our most vital and protective organs. We recommend daily the use on a daily basis of a good quality wash, an environmental protectant, an anti-oxidant, a topical repair agent, a collagen stimulator to promote skin regeneration, and a sunscreen.
